A 6-meter wide, ever-changing, colourful web-based art installation. projected with precision on “Memphis” inspired wooden elements.

Google for Startups' "Moonshot Cafe"

"Moonshot Cafe" is Google for Startups' space for founders and community to work, hold meetings and get to know each other. When we were asked to design the main piece for this space, it was clear - we were aiming to create a piece as dynamic and unique as the space and its community.

We decided to create an innovative concept: Cloud-generated art, rendered in a web browser, mapped and delivered by a projector on wooden 3D shapes.

In order to make this project succeed, we had to come up with a way to mount the shapes on the wall while keeping them perfectly aligned with the drawings and projection.

As we live in a dynamic era, where no moment is similar to its next, we created a soothing, yet ever changing art, that each of its moments is unique.

Unlike most projection mapping installations, this art installation is web-based. This way, it can be interactive, controlled from afar and it’s extremely flexible. The gradients projected on the shapes are constantly changing and together with moving elements inside them they create infinite unique moments.

In the dashboard, the team can choose the color schemes and add a scrolling message to the installation

One of the installations’ features is the control dashboard that enables the Google for Startups team to control the installation and change gradients as they wish, including presets for special occasions like Independence Day and pride week.

Interactivity

We added a layer of gamification by allowing the cafe members to play a game that is reflected in the installation by dropping gravity-affected elements that "reveal" the projection.

Behind the scenes

One of the main challenges of this project, was the correspondence between the projection and the 3D elements. In order to make this project succeed, we had to come up with a way to mount the shapes on the wall while keeping them perfectly aligned with the drawings and projection.
